GFCW Round 2 Game Review

Leading into our Round 2 clash with West Adelaide, the team had done everything we could ask of them to prepare for a physical contest. In fact, our main training session was one of the best we’d had in recent times.

Our pregame preparation was equally as good. The vibe throughout the group could not be faulted.

Something went amiss somewhere between the final words in the change room and the first centre bounce. Unfortunately, this was the trend across all four quarters.

What we displayed on Friday night was completely unrecognisable and looked nothing like anything we had shown to date. West Adelaide deserves a lot of credit – their pressure and manic game plan was first class, but we didn’t fire a shot and allow them to do as they wished for the entire game.

It was very difficult to find positives, but the never surrender attitude of Lucy Armitage, who amassed 12 tackles, including a 30m rundown effort that should have been team lifting for anyone with a pulse, must be highlighted. Sixteen year old Zoe Smith, playing her second game of SANFLW football in just her second season, worked hard throughout the game. Tessa Kohn, who is also playing her first season at SANFLW level after coming through our junior program, played a strong and physical game.

Whilst the players are hurting, our leaders have already ensured the team’s focus is on what we can control moving forward. We are really looking forward to the challenge of taking on the vastly improved Central District at 11am this Saturday at X-Convenience Oval Elizabeth. This is a great opportunity for our group to walk the talk.
