It was a cracking day for football at Unley Oval on Saturday afternoon and it was great to see so many supporters at the ground to watch the game.
With Sturt coming off three good wins we knew they would be physical and keen to turn the tables after losing to us by 4 points earlier in the season.
The first quarter was a bit of an arm wrestle with both sides having similar entries inside 50. Our midfield started well and they were winning the stoppage battle to provide our forwards with some good opportunity to hit the scoreboard. However, we weren’t able to capitalise on these entries as well as I would have liked. We went into quarter time 8-points up but probably could have been a goal or two more.
With the second quarter underway it became an evenly fought contest but with a few careless turnovers and some poor entries inside 50 Sturt managed to take the lead half way through the quarter. Then, we scored a couple of late goals to go into half time 11 points clear.
The third quarter was our best quarter for the game with us capitalising on our forward entries and kicking 5:3 to 1:1. With a bit more care we probably should have been a couple more goals up but it was pleasing to see an even spread of goal kickers for the quarter, with five individuals hitting the scoreboard.
The last quarter was again a bit of an arm wrestle with both sides making silly mistakes and costing goals. But our ability to win the contested ball and deliver inside 50 was a highlight, with Liam McBean kicking three goals for the quarter and finishing with six goals for the game.
Brett Turner continued his good form in the midfield and Jack Hannath was crucial in providing a good contest and giving our midfielders first use of the ball. Brad Agnew is enjoying his time in the midfield and found plenty of the ball whilst Matt Snook was his usual industrious self around stoppages. Max Proud and Brodie Newman were very good in defence. Once again the support from our members was fantastic and we look forward to seeing you all this Saturday afternoon for our big game against South Adelaide at ACH Group Stadium.
