GFCW Remain on top after Round 3

PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY MERIDIAN COMMUNICATIONS

Glenelg Women remain on top of the ladder after a strong performance against the reigning premiers in the Bulldogs in Round 3.

As the coach of the Glenelg Women, I couldn’t be prouder of the team’s performance in our recent SANFLW match against Central Districts Women. Facing off against the reigning premiers, we knew it would be a tough battle, but our focus on a strong start assisted us well eventually running out 42 point winners in another game of hot conditions.

The first quarter saw us take Centrals uncontested game away from them, and move it onto our terms with 23 more uncontested possessions, heading into the slight breeze. Jess Bates was again leading from the front kicking the first for the game in under 2 minutes to go with her 34 disposals by the end of the game. With 12 more inside 50s it was also great to gain some synergy in our forward line, with 5 individual goals scorers, showcasing our offensive strength once again.

The second quarter saw us extending our lead even further, not allowing a score from Central Districts from one inside 50. Work rate of our midfield group was exceptional, providing options inside 50, and accuracy probably cost us an extended lead with 2 goals 5. Piper Window was dominant around the contest, supported by new tiger Jasmin Stewart. Eloise Mackereth again showcased why she is a force in the forward line with strong marking in the 50.

However, as the game progressed into the third quarter, we noticed a slight dip in intensity from our side. Our tackle pressure and work rate dropped, and allowed Centrals to come back into the game, with 4 goals for the quarter on quick transition. I think this will be used for some learnings with some game situation awareness, and defensive accountability in transition. We know that great team will push back when we have the momentum, and we just need to figure out a way to work through this in the moment.

We were able to collect ourselves and refocus at the three-quarter time break. Our players dug deep, rediscovering their intensity and determination to finish the game strongly. Adding another three goals to our score difference, we sealed the victory with style and determination. Our forward pressure in this quarter allowed goals to Eldridge, Franson and Tonon who finished with 2 each for the game. Pleasingly, we were able to apply scoreboard pressure and our work rate increased leading tackle and disposal counts for the quarter. At Centrals home ground, we know that these 2 things are important for success.

Overall, it was a fantastic team effort and a well-deserved victory against a tough opponent. I couldn’t be prouder of the resilience, team efforts, and determination shown by every player on the field. Although challenged, again we were able to bounce back for the last and make sure we finished the game strong. We’ll take this momentum forward as we continue to play to our strengths and look forward to next week against West Adelaide.
