An outstanding and vocal crowd was on hand, on a warm Good Friday arvo, for what promised to be a cracking contest which certainly didn’t fail to deliver. Two very good teams played and exciting brand of football over the four quarters with some high skill level at times and some hard contested and desperate football around that. While it was disappointing not to get over the line in the end, we take away some good learnings, and understanding the need to be completely locked-in all moments of these types of games when, especially when the result comes down to a few moments either way over the 120 mins of football.
Our Reserves group played out a thrilling draw in the earlier game against a strong South Adelaide team. Both teams had the momentum in the game throughout and both had chances to win at different times but that wasn’t to be. We continue to see some strong football both offensively and especially defensively from our group which is pleasing. There a number of guys playing at a really strong level and continue to knock on the door of League selection which is a great problem for our club. It is exciting to watch and be challenged by this from a coaching group perspective. We look forward to that continuing on.
We went into the League game knowing we were up against a very strong Adelaide team that had been very impressive and dominant in all areas in the first part of the season; we were also aware they had a fresh and well rested group leading into the game. We were happy to start the game well and get ourselves ahead in the game. The 2nd half of the first quarter was a little sloppy in all areas that allowed Adelaide to have control and us having to scramble. What was really pleasing was our ability to keep finding a way to hit the scoreboard and not allow them to gain energy from their momentum which they are very good at.
While we found ourselves behind in the game throughout the second half, it never felt like we couldn’t get ourselves into it with a chance towards the end, and credit to the players that kept at it for the entire game and while we didn’t quite get there, we had enough chances throughout the last 15 mins or so but just were not able to finish our work. Pleasingly the way our group was covering the ground and working is a great sign for us in terms of where we are at physically. It will be important as we continue into the marathon that is a season.
We head into our Grand Final rematch with Norwood in the traditional ANZAC Day game. The opportunity for our players and our club to be playing an such a special day is something we are excited about, and we look forward to having a really strong and vocal crowd here again in what will be a great contest.
Well done to our Women’s Development team who have earned their way through to a grand final this week. Outstanding work by all involved. Good luck to all this week.
