DONATELIFE SA

This week we will be raising awareness on organ donation with DonateLife SA.

Organ, eye and tissue donation saves lives, restores health and improves the quality of life for thousands of Australians each year. But did you know that only 2% of people who die in hospital each year can be considered for organ donation? One organ donor can save the lives of up to 7 people and help many more through eye and tissue donation. The majority of donors are deceased, but people can also become a living donor.

While the majority of Australians support organ and tissue donation, only around one in three (36%) are registered to be a donor. There are currently around 1,750 Australians on the waitlist for an organ transplant. There are also more than 13,000 additional people on dialysis – some may need a kidney transplant. Since the national program first began in 2009, more than 15,500 people have received life-saving organ transplants from 5,450 deceased organ donors.

DonateLife SA coordinates all organ and tissue donor activities across the state. It works with hospitals and hospital-based DonateLife medical and nursing specialists to provide professional donation services and encourage best practice to increase donation rates.
