GFCW outplayed in Round 12

PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY MERIDIAN COMMUNICATIONS

A really challenging match write up this week after what has been our best first half of football, after some slow starts. Followed by a really, really disappointing last quarter, overshadowing the highlights for the match this week.

The first quarter saw us lead possession, inside 50 and more pleasingly our pressure had returned with 35 first quarter tackles, a stark improvement on last week where we had 70 for the whole game. Goals to Horne and Franson saw us get reward for our effort, but a little inaccurate with 3 points where a few of them should have been goals. Second quarter again saw us win good, contested football heading into the breeze, maintaining possession and stifling centrals kick-mark game. Our pressure again, a good sign of our want to win this game. With solid performances from Jo Miller, Violet Patterson and Jess Bates who led our disposals, tackles and clearances for Glenelg we headed into the main break by 11 points against the reigning premiers.

The third quarter saw Centrals bully their way around the contest, with physicality and employing some aggressive tactics in the game, we lost momentum at stoppage, losing the clearances. We fought well and stayed in the game but managed only the one goal to Jess Searle who kicked a great goal after a silky sidestep. From the three-quarter break, the game completely got away from us. Losing all key performance metrics, we could not match Centrals physicality around the contest, nor their aerial presence. Allowing the reigning premiers easy access to goals, with messy defensive accountability all around the ground also allowed them into their other strength in the last quarter which was their centre bounce clearance. Allowing that amount of score in a winnable game at three quarter time is something that isn’t acceptable by any of our standards. We look to reset and go again against South in Round 13.
