Fair to say we didn’t play at the level required this week or anywhere near the standard we have set as a team across the last couple of seasons. Sturt’s discipline and ability to stick to their game plan was first class. They certainly made it difficult for us to get our game going and thoroughly deserve their spot in the Grand Final.
That said, despite having many players down on their usual output, we still generated enough opportunities in front of goal to win the game. We were just unable the take them. In the end, we got what we deserved.
It’s a disappointing to finish the season this way, but that’s footy. Only one team celebrates after the last game of the season. It’s a tough and ruthless game that exposes weaknesses and takes no prisoners.
Our goal was to be a contender once more and not just spike up to win a premiership then fall away just as quickly. Pleasingly, there is a strong belief that we are a strong program who will continue to be in the premiership window for some time to come. We have a strong squad that is finally catching up to some of the other clubs with regards to quality juniors coming through the system. Our culture is a real competitive advantage and our leaders continue to drive high standards and expectations. We will not be falling away anytime soon.
