A disappointing result, in a game that was statistically closer than the margin at the end of the game. I thought we came into the game with great energy and intent in how we wanted to play. South are a very defensive side, but also generating a lot of score from their possession game. They obviously know how to play Flinders Stadium well, as a home ground. Although we started well, the opposition managed to score in the first quarter and we couldn’t quite break their defensive structure despite only 3 less inside 50s.
The second quarter after they scored 2 quick goals, South seemed really happy to just hold the lead, taking all the air out the game generating repeat stoppage. A great mark under great pressure saw Eloise Mackereth strike for our first and we felt a new energy across the ground. Our midfield just couldn’t find their rhythm with this change and was obviously tactical by the South team who know our midifield are dominant when allowed. After a rally at half time, we dominated the third in most facets of the game, including contested and uncontested possession, tackles and our inside 50s doubling South Adelaide and we were able to lock the ball in our front half- we just couldn’t capitalise with only 4 behinds for the quarter.
We were only 17 points down at the last break, and although thought that we were still in the game, switching off from a couple of important plays saw South add 2 easy goals to the result. We know that our best is there, we just need to make sure we are daring and bold in how we want to execute our game plan and style. The high scoring, fun, game that we had demonstrated until injuries curtailed our progress. Our midfield again, looking different this week for the 15th game in a row, welcoming back Ellie Kellock who was tireless in the middle supported by Jess Bates who manages to shrug any tag amassing 32 disposals and 10 tackles. Grace Duffy on the wing had an impactful game, and demonstrated again why she’s an important cog in our mid group. Georgie Fielder again generating offense from the backline with poise and vision so there are plenty of positive looking forward.
We stand at the face of our next challenge, after putting ourselves in a great position all season. This is our moment to step into the arena, to embrace the struggle, and to give everything we have. Our momentum is building, and our determination is unwavering. We will face this challenge with courage and, know that our efforts will define us as we look to lock a grand final appearance in at the end of this week.
