Reeva’s Match Wrap | Round 10

PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY CONCEPT DATA

Round 10 and our second meeting with the top-of-the-table Sturt Football Club and, unfortunately, it played out very similar to our first clash in round 5. While it is disappointing not to get the win, the journey of the season means we grab some learnings, keep looking at areas to improve, move on really quickly and get ready for Norwood in a short turn around this Saturday.

With two really good teams competing against each other, it is important to be doing everything pretty well. Sturt are the benchmark right now and have, and continue to, do that really well week to week. Our first quarter while not terrible was frustrating more for the way we bombed the ball going inside our forward 50. We created enough opportunities to take advantage of the strong wind but didn’t help ourselves. Equally frustrating was just being a little off on where we want/expect to be defensively, which allowed Sturt to score a little too easy a couple of times. Our 2nd quarter, while still not feeling like we were at our best, was better and we did control it for most part, much like the first a couple of goals against when we had some momentum was not ideal. The 2nd half of the game did open up a little more, we played some strong football and really controlled the 3rd quarter but 3 goal 5 didn’t give us the reward we might have had or possibly deserved.

With the game tight throughout the first half of the last quarter we were not without our chances and had ourselves in a good position, in these games it can come down to some moments and grabbing momentum when it is there. Credit to Sturt they did that and deserved to win the game. It is only round 10, we are just half-way through the season,  and with so much yet to play out, and improvement to gain – this will be our focus into round 11.

We have had some challenges with things out of our control, as well as some injuries that are mounting up, but pleasingly we also have some players ready to resume playing which will be a strong boast over the next few weeks.

Despite the challenges mentioned, our Reserves group was as young and inexperienced as I can remember in my time at the Club. The game played out in that manner, whilst they never gave up, right throughout the contest it was a battle against a Sturt team that were strong throughout. As has been the case over the year, the young group will take a lot away from it and continue to improve. They sit in a really strong position in the competition.

We move onto Norwood this coming Saturday which will be a great challenge. The ladder position for them currently doesn’t reflect the quality of opposition that they are, and we will need to be at our best to get the result. What I know is our guys, while disappointed from last week, are very good at getting back to work in our training and will be ready to go come Saturday. We look forward to having a strong contingent of Bay’s supporters there to cheer us on.
