SANFL Anzac Day traditions thriving

By SANFL Media

SANFL’s Anzac Round and the traditional Anzac Day clash between the previous season’s Grand Finalists, dating back to 1948, are among the most revered match days of the minor premiership season.

All Anzac Round matches this week will feature an Observance Ceremony before the first bounce in a mark of respect for the contribution and sacrifice of all those who have served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.

As reigning Premiers, Glenelg earns the right to host the 2024 Anzac Day match on Thursday, facing its 2023 Grand Final opponent Sturt before an anticipated bumper crowd of over 5,000 at Glenelg’s Stratarama Stadium.

Glenelg and Sturt men’s and women’s players will don specially designed commemorative guernseys for their 2024 Anzac Day matches, with the Hostplus SANFLW match to follow under lights at 5.10pm.

Other SANFL Clubs to also wear commemorative Anzac guernseys across the Round this year include North Adelaide and South Adelaide.

Following the Anzac Day game on Thursday, the Bob Quinn Medal – named after the late South Australian Football Hall of Fame inductee, dual Magarey Medal winner, Port Adelaide great and decorated World War II legend – will be presented to the Best on Ground player at the conclusion of the match by Bob’s son, Greg Quinn.

In addition to the on-field footy action at the Anzac Day grand final re-match on Thursday, there will be a range of fun activities happening around the ground to entertain the whole family, including:

  • AAMI Lucky Zone – enjoy a comfortable seat with a great view of the game from up on the hill.
  • SANFL Bean Bag Zone – kick back and relax while watching the action in bean bags and loungers.
  • The Advertiser Family Zone – heaps of fun for the kids with putt putt and giant lawn games including chess, giant Jenga, corn hole and Connect 4.
  • Inflatable footy activations – practice goal kicking skills with Sherrin ‘face’ footies
