GFCW end their Round 10 clash with a draw against Norwood on Saturday.
In a tough contested game, we couldn’t quite find a way to add an extra point on the board, ending the game against Norwood in a draw. Norwood like to play a really congested style and so we found it challenging to find the space and move the ball like we know we are capable of. For the second week in a row, we started on the back foot, giving away some silly free kicks to allow Norwood to kick away in the first quarter and we had to gain it back slowly through the game.
We had a couple of opportunities, but it took us until the second quarter to impact, with a goal to young gun, Jordy Horne on the run set up brilliantly from Matilda Wilmore. We applied 120 tackles for the game, which normally align with success, but this was the nature of the game. 23 of those coming from workhorse midfielder Jess Bates who was relentless all day. Supported by Jo Miller, we were able to chip away and regain the lead at the third quarter through a great snap to Mel Hinge on the boundary.
The last quarter we were squashed by Norwood in our backline, which eventually added a goal to them. Losing Poppy Scholz pre game and Lauren Edwards in the first, our backline stood tall for most of the game, and should be really proud of their efforts. Trailing by 1 point, Sam Franson sent the ball forward from an anti-density free kick which trickled out the back and through for a point. Unfortunately, we just couldn’t quite get over the line. I think the pleasing aspect of the game has been the groups adaptability as we’ve had to make a dozen forced changes over recent weeks, with injuries, sickness and suspension. Our group remain focussed but able to work through the changes against a top 4 side. For the remaining games, we acknowledge have become the hunted as we sit on top of the ladder, but need to flip our mindset to be the ones hunting the opposition. We look to continue and bounce back against an improved North Adelaide this weekend back at prospect.
