VALE DICK BONE

Glenelg defender from the 1950s Richard ‘Dick’ Bone passed away on Saturday. He was 90.

Bone played 79 league games for the Tigers between 1952-58, remembered as a determined back pocket player. A talented allround sportsman, he also played A-grade district cricket for Glenelg and was a member at Glenelg Golf Club for 42 years. Until last year he regularly had lunch at Glenelg Football Club, of which he was made a life member in 1961.

Bone was Glenelg player No. 384, having a tough initiation for his debut in Round 7 of 1952, facing reigning premier Port Adelaide at Alberton. The popular clubman served on the management committee in 1959-60, was junior colts coach in 1961 and C-grade coach in 1965.

A medium-pace bowler, he played with Glenelg District Cricket Club from 1949-57, his best figures 4/34. He played in the Glenelg Footballers team in the SA Electric Light Cricket Association that became SA champions in 1954-55. The star-studded side was captained by Colin Churchett and also featured Stan Wickham, Don Taylor, Billy Wilson, Pat Hall, Trevor Churchett, Allan Wright, Bill Prior and Mostyn Matters.

FUNERAL DETAILS

Dick’s funeral will be held at Berry Funerals, Magill Rd, Norwood on Friday (June 23) from 1pm and after at Glenelg Football Club.
