VALE DOUG BLACKBURN
Glenelg Football Club is in mourning after Tigers star from the 1950s and ’60s Doug Blackburn passed away on Wednesday. He was 82.
A determined, strong, hard-at-it ruck-rover who never took a backward step, Blackburn played 116 league games for the Bays between 1959-67.
Doug hailed from a farm on SA’s West Coast, Dutton Bay on lower Eyre Peninsula, where he was recruited by Tigers great and captain-coach of the time Neil Davies. He helped Glenelg win the 1959 Advertiser Cup pre-season competition but his only finals appearance came in a hard-fought loss to Sturt in 1964. But his playing career at the Bay ended with a premiership in the seconds, winning the grand final against North Adelaide in 1967.
